The 2016 Athletics carnival arrived on a great April day as the weather was perfect to be competing at Dolamore Oval. The House spirit was clearly evident in the costumes that were worn around the oval from the Year 7’s to the Year 12’s.
The participation in events was incredible this year as there were over 30 competitors in every long, triple and high jump event, and the 100m and 200m heats went 30 minutes over time because there were so many competitors. The participation tally ranged between 120 and 150 competitors from every House which is fantastic. MGSC Athletics records go all the way back to 1966, the year after the school opened, and this year we had 6 records broken. Congratulations to Emily Ryan (Year 7) who threw 32.9 meters in the discus event – 6 meters further than the previous record; Millie Belleville (Year 8) who ran the 1500m event in 5minutes and 16 seconds; Zoe Cunningham (Year 9) who hurdled the 90m hurdles in 14.92seconds, Zoe also jumped 11.10 meters in the triple jump to break that record as well; and lastly K.B did the double and beat the 400m record by running 1minute and 2seconds and the 800m record in 2minutes and 33seconds. Congratulations to these record breakers. Every competitor receives points for their House depending where they finish in the event. At the end of the carnival we are able to see which students got the most points for their House for each age group, they are the age group champions. The Under 13 champion from Kenny is Sophie Bolmat; Under 14 from Melba is Zoe Cunningham; Under 15 from Jackson is Taylah Tysoe; Under 16 from Kenny is Sarsha Berntsen; Under 17 from Kenny is Vivian Fidantsis; and Open age group from Jackson is Marley Berntsen. Congratulations to the age group champions. Most importantly are the overall house results which determine the House champion. In fourth place on 851 points was Mackellar, in third place on 984 points was Jackson, in second place with 1016 points was Melba, and the winning house with 1308 points was Kenny. Congratulations to Kenny House senior house captains Evie Tripp and Maddie Culshaw, middle and junior House captains Maddy McAllister and Daisy Walker, for winning by almost 300 points. A big thank you to all staff who helped out in the heat of the day, often with very little breaks and with great spirits. Congratulations to all our competitors and spectators for attending the carnival, and well done to Kenny for continuing their success in 2016. Go Mentone.
