On Tuesday 20th October the 10 students competing at the State Athletics Carnival held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park had an outstanding day. The weather was hot and humid which only added to a long day spent watching the States best athletes compete.
Zoe Cunningham (Year 8) had a historic day winning two gold and two silver medals; K.B (Year 8) threw 32.88m in the Under 13 Javelin event to take home gold; Grace Stebbins (Year 11) got bronze in the 200m and 4th in the 100m; Bianca Lawrence (Year 11) competed valiantly in Shot Put and Discus; and Marley Berntsen was unfortunate disqualified after winning gold in the 1500m walk. However, the highlight of the day came at the very end as our Under 17 girls (Amina Mahmoud, Bianca Lawrence, Grace Stebbins and Charlotte Byrne) won bronze and our invincible Under 13 team won gold by 30m and only 0.05s off the State record (Daisy Walker, Zoe Cunningham, Teiki Waata and Chelsea Ryan).
Mentone came 11th in the school competition despite only having no male competitors, the highest single sex school of the day. Congratulations to the 10 competitors on a great Athletics season, I look forward to the next season starting with our Athletics Carnival in April. Go Mentone!
On Thursday 8th October Mentone competed at Casey Fields for the Southern Metro Regional Athletics Carnival. We had 33 competitors competing in 41 events across the day including 4 of the 6 relay competitions. There were some outstanding performances throughout the day including Zoe Cunningham winning 4 of her events and coming second in two more; Bianca Lawrence winning 3 of her 4 events; Grace Stebbins winning all three of her events; and the Under 13 4x100m relay team setting a new Regional record of 54.50 seconds. Mentone has 10 students going to the State Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 20th October at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Congratulations to all athletes for their attendance, help and efforts on a very hot October day. Go Mentone!
