Year 11 student and avid runner, Emily M, completed the Melbourne 1/2 Marathon on October 16th. Emily completed the 21km in 1 hour and 41 minutes which is an average of 5 minutes per kilometer, I very solid pace to continue for 21kms. She came in 3rd position in the Under 19 age group which is a fantastic result for a 16 year old.
Emily has taken up recreational running for a local running club in the mornings before school and can often be seen running in the early hours of the morning. Perfectly suited for long distance running, Emily has a unique ability to sustain a consistent pace for kilometer after kilometer. Congratulations Emily! On Monday 17th October Mentone Girls Secondary College had 11 students competing in 17 events at the State Athletics Carnival. Our team of athletes performed sensationally across multiple track and field events to finish with a school tally of 141points which was the 6th highest score in the State. To finish above 300 other schools, with many being co-ed, is a testament to the ability of our girls.

On Thursday 6th October, Mentone Girls had 32 students compete at the Southern Metro Regional Athletics Carnival at Casey Fields. After a week of wind and rain, Melbourne turned on a fantastic day for the best athletes in the Region.
With Mr Russell manning the Javelin duties all day I was able to watch some fantastic events on the track and field. Zoe C (Year 9) dominated all day and won the Under 14 triple jump, long jump, hurdles (record) and 200m; Bianca L (Year 12) proved that she is a dynamite shot putter and discus thrower to make the States for yet another year; Grace S (Year 12) killed the field and won the 100, 200 and 400m events as well as anchoring the U18 4x100m relay team; Emily R (Year 7) started her High Schooling with a trip to States in the discus and shot put; Sophie B (Year 7) dug deep in the 800m to win gold; and Kisarna won the javelin for the third year in a row as well as the 400 and came second in the 800m. The defending State Champion U14 4x100m relay team (Kisarna, Zoe, Chelsea R, Teiki W) won their relay again, as did the defending State Silver medalist U18 4x100m relay team (Charlotte B, Amina M, Grace and Viv F). A few other notable performances were - Sarah P (Year 8) in the hurdles, Chelsea fought through a crook stomach to compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay event, in a heroic run Milly W (Year 7) almost brought the U13 relay team back from about 30 meters to finish second by a fingernail, Emily M (Year 11) pegged runners back with ease in the 1500m event to finish third, Taylah T (Year 9) hit the afterburners on in the 200m event to finish second, and Sarsha B (Year 11) showed class in the shot put and put on a dazzling display in the triple jump. Congratulations to all athletes who competed for MGSC on the day. We will be having 11 students competing in 17 events at the State Athletics Carnival on Monday 17th October at Lakeside Stadium. Good luck to everyone and thank you to Mr Russell for his help throughout the entire day. Go Mentone! |
