What a busy weekend Mentone Girls' Secondary College had at the AIS Track and Field Stadium in our nations capital. Mr Russell and myself were on hand to watch Kisarna B (Year 9 - 10th) in the javelin, Zoe C (Year 9 - 11th) in long jump, and Emily R (Year 7 - 4th) in shot put compete for Victoria in the National Championships over the weekend before turning out attention to our team of six compete against the best schools in the country for the 2016 National Schools Knockouts Final.
Our team of six won the Victorian Championships and were now competing against the top 4 teams in every State for the National Championship. Kisarna, Zoe and Emily were joined by Teiki W (Year 9), Milly W (Year 7) and Sophie B (Year 7) to participate in 7 events throughout the day. Team MGSC dominated the Junior Girls competition by winning the javelin (Kisarna), long jump (Zoe) and shot put (Emily), 2nd in the 4x200m relay (Zoe, Teiki, Kisarna and Milly), and 3rd in the hurdles (Zoe) and 800m (Kisarna). We also had Milly (11th) and Teiki (21st) in the 100m, and Sophie finish (14th) in the 800m. All of our results meant that we finished with a total of 203 points which put us in 2nd spot and a Silver Medal. A silver medal in a National Athletics competition is a fantastic achievement. All six athletes have held their own against all the public and private schools in Australia, proving that you do not need to recruit or target athletes to join your program but just encourage and motivate them to commit to a goal. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Erina Cunningham for all of her help and support over the last year in preparation for this event. I would also like to thank the parents and families who came to Canberra to support their daughter and Team MGSC - James and Andrea Webster, Paul Bolmat and Dianne Lewis-Nixon, Milly and Sarsha Berntsen, Katie Ryan, Cam Cunningham, and Shane and Lou Waata. Lastly, a big thank you to the MGSC school community who donated their time and money at the barbeque fundraisers and had a guess with the Jelly Bean contest, as well as the SRC committee for their donation as well. As I say at every school assembly, we have some absolutely incredible State and National athletes who help put our school on the map, with all your support and encouragement I look forward to being able to offer them more and more opportunities like this in the future.
