What a busy weekend Mentone Girls' Secondary College had at the AIS Track and Field Stadium in our nations capital. Mr Russell and myself were on hand to watch Kisarna B (Year 9 - 10th) in the javelin, Zoe C (Year 9 - 11th) in long jump, and Emily R (Year 7 - 4th) in shot put compete for Victoria in the National Championships over the weekend before turning out attention to our team of six compete against the best schools in the country for the 2016 National Schools Knockouts Final.
Our team of six won the Victorian Championships and were now competing against the top 4 teams in every State for the National Championship. Kisarna, Zoe and Emily were joined by Teiki W (Year 9), Milly W (Year 7) and Sophie B (Year 7) to participate in 7 events throughout the day. Team MGSC dominated the Junior Girls competition by winning the javelin (Kisarna), long jump (Zoe) and shot put (Emily), 2nd in the 4x200m relay (Zoe, Teiki, Kisarna and Milly), and 3rd in the hurdles (Zoe) and 800m (Kisarna). We also had Milly (11th) and Teiki (21st) in the 100m, and Sophie finish (14th) in the 800m. All of our results meant that we finished with a total of 203 points which put us in 2nd spot and a Silver Medal. A silver medal in a National Athletics competition is a fantastic achievement. All six athletes have held their own against all the public and private schools in Australia, proving that you do not need to recruit or target athletes to join your program but just encourage and motivate them to commit to a goal. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Erina Cunningham for all of her help and support over the last year in preparation for this event. I would also like to thank the parents and families who came to Canberra to support their daughter and Team MGSC - James and Andrea Webster, Paul Bolmat and Dianne Lewis-Nixon, Milly and Sarsha Berntsen, Katie Ryan, Cam Cunningham, and Shane and Lou Waata. Lastly, a big thank you to the MGSC school community who donated their time and money at the barbeque fundraisers and had a guess with the Jelly Bean contest, as well as the SRC committee for their donation as well. As I say at every school assembly, we have some absolutely incredible State and National athletes who help put our school on the map, with all your support and encouragement I look forward to being able to offer them more and more opportunities like this in the future. Go Mentone! Over the last two days Year 9 student Cara J (Year 8) has competed at a Victorian Swimming meet where she has swum in 5 events and incredibly got 4 personal best times. Cara has been training consistently over the winter and spring in preparation for the summer competitions but has not raced since the autumn season.
Cara didn't get any national times, but came very close to two times - the 50 Free and 100 Back. The 50 Free she got a 28.57 whereas the national time is a 28.10, and in the 100 Back she got a 1.10.83 whereas the national time is 1.09.80. It was a very successful weekend and her mindset was very positive! Cara has been an avid student of sport psychology in 2016, changing her approach and attitude towards swimming and competition very impressively. She says that she is getting better and better and that she is enjoying racing (but not getting up at 4:30am every morning) a lot more now because of her positive attitude. Below is one of Cara's favourite quotes and two of her favourite books this year have been Michael Phelps' 'No Limits' and Rafael Nadal's 'Rafa'. Our Year 8 Basketball team made it through to the State Final held at MSAC on Monday 14th November. They played three games that were all very close, they won one and lost two. The standard of play was outstanding by all members of the team.
The girls had a successful day of improvement, fun and great team work. Their first game was against Maribyrnong Sports Academy. The girls put in a hard battle and defended really well against some very tall players but unfortunately they lost by eight points. Their second game was against Lavalla Catholic College from Traralgon. Again they played really well, moved the ball around the court and scored well. Unfortunately they lost by four points. Lavalla ended up winning the Year 8 Basketball State flag in the final against Bendigo. MGSC played Templestowe College in our third game and won by four points. All eight players should be congratulated on their efforts. The team consisted of April B, Mikala C, Maddy G, Uma M-M, Paige P, Marion S, Sanju S and Daisy W. A big thanks to Barry McCabe for coaching the girls on the day. Go Mentone! Over the weekend of November 4-6th the 2016 Victorian All Schools State Championships were held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. With Australian 400m star, Morgan Mitchell present to watch, the best athletes in Victoria aimed to win their events to represent Victoria at the National Championships in Canberra this December.
Mentone Girls SC had six students compete and three will be representing Victoria at Nationals. Zoe C (Year 9) won the U16 Long Jump, Kisarna B (Year 9) the U15 Javelin and Emily R (Year 7) came 2nd in the Shot Put. Please see below for all the other results. Congratulations to all competitors and parents for a long three days at the track. Good luck to those competing at Nationals. Go Mentone!
Year 11 student and avid runner, Emily M, completed the Melbourne 1/2 Marathon on October 16th. Emily completed the 21km in 1 hour and 41 minutes which is an average of 5 minutes per kilometer, I very solid pace to continue for 21kms. She came in 3rd position in the Under 19 age group which is a fantastic result for a 16 year old.
Emily has taken up recreational running for a local running club in the mornings before school and can often be seen running in the early hours of the morning. Perfectly suited for long distance running, Emily has a unique ability to sustain a consistent pace for kilometer after kilometer. Congratulations Emily! On Monday 17th October Mentone Girls Secondary College had 11 students competing in 17 events at the State Athletics Carnival. Our team of athletes performed sensationally across multiple track and field events to finish with a school tally of 141points which was the 6th highest score in the State. To finish above 300 other schools, with many being co-ed, is a testament to the ability of our girls.
