Mentone Girls' SC student, Jacqueline (Year 10), competed for Bayside Futsal Pirates at the 2017 Craig Foster International Tournament on the Gold Coast. The Under 16 team played eight games and won all eight games which is an amazing achievement in elite sports and it is a record for any female Futsal team in the history of the tournament. The Girls 16s now have USA Futsal's World Cup in Orlando to look forward to, as they qualify for that tournament by winning the Craig Foster.
Mentone Girls' SC will continue its close relationship with Bayside Futsal Pirates by entering a Year 7 and 8 team into the Friday night competition which is run out of the schools gymnasium. The 2016 Year 7 team improved dramatically throughout the Term 4 competition, picking up the skills and game play very quickly. If you are interested in participating in a fast, skilled and growing sport please contact Mr Bruhn at school or look at the below link with direct contacts to Bayside Futsal Pirates. What a busy weekend Mentone Girls' Secondary College had at the AIS Track and Field Stadium in our nations capital. Mr Russell and myself were on hand to watch K.B (10th) in the javelin, Zoe C (11th) in long jump, and Emily R (4th) in shot put compete for Victoria in the National Championships over the weekend before turning out attention to our team of six compete against the best schools in the country for the 2016 National Schools Knockouts Final.
Our team of six won the Victorian Championships and were now competing against the top 4 teams in every State for the National Championship. Kisarna (Year 10), Zoe (Year 10) and Emily (Year 8) were joined by Teiki W (Year 10), Milly W (Year 8) and Sophie B (Year 8) to participate in 7 events throughout the day. Team MGSC dominated the Junior Girls competition by winning the javelin (Kisarna), long jump (Zoe) and shot put (Emily), 2nd in the 4x200m relay (Zoe, Teiki, Kisarna and Milly), and 3rd in the hurdles (Zoe) and 800m (Kisarna). We also had Milly (11th) and Teiki (21st) in the 100m, and Sophie finish (14th) in the 800m. All of our results meant that we finished with a total of 203 points which put us in 2nd spot and a Silver Medal. A silver medal in a National Athletics competition is a fantastic achievement. All six athletes have held their own against all the public and private schools in Australia, proving that you do not need to recruit or target athletes to join your program but just encourage and motivate them to commit to a goal. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Erina Cunningham for all of her help and support over the last year in preparation for this event. I would also like to thank the parents and families who came to Canberra to support their daughter and Team MGSC - James and Andrea Webster, Paul Bolmat and Dianne Lewis-Nixon, Milly and Sarsha B, Katie Ryan, Cam Cunningham, and Shane and Lou Waata. Lastly, a big thank you to the MGSC school community who donated their time and money at the barbeque fundraisers and had a guess with the Jelly Bean contest, as well as the SRC committee for their donation as well. As I say at every school assembly, we have some absolutely incredible State and National athletes who help put our school on the map, with all your support and encouragement I look forward to being able to offer them more and more opportunities like this in the future. Over the last two days Year 9 student Cara J has competed at a Victorian Swimming meet where she has swum in 5 events and incredibly got 4 personal best times. Cara has been training consistently over the winter and spring in preparation for the summer competitions but has not raced since the autumn season. Cara didn't get any national times, but came very close to two times - the 50 Free and 100 Back. The 50 Free she got a 28.57 whereas the national time is a 28.10, and in the 100 Back she got a 1.10.83 whereas the national time is 1.09.80. It was a very successful weekend and her mindset was very positive! Cara has been an avid student of sport psychology in 2016, changing her approach and attitude towards swimming and competition very impressively. She says that she is getting better and better and that she is enjoying racing (but not getting up at 4:30am every morning) a lot more now because of her positive attitude. Below is one of Cara's favourite quotes and two of her favourite books this year have been Michael Phelps' 'No Limits' and Rafael Nadal's 'Rafa'. |
Over the weekend of November 4-6th the 2016 Victorian All Schools State Championships were held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. With Australian 400m star, Morgan Mitchell present to watch, the best athletes in Victoria aimed to win their events to represent Victoria at the National Championships in Canberra this December.
Mentone Girls SC had six students compete and three will be representing Victoria at Nationals. Zoe C (Year 9) won the U16 Long Jump, Kisarna B the U15 Javelin and Emily R (Year 7) came 2nd in the Shot Put. Please see below for all the other results. Congratulations to all competitors and parents for a long three days at the track. Good luck to those competing at Nationals. Go Mentone! |
MGSC Basketball star, Paige P (Year 8), has had an outstanding year playing for Knox Raiders. Her team won the State Championships and she got the MVP in the Grand Final. The Raiders also won the National competition and she is now playing for Dandenong in the Under 16 age group.
Paige has sat on the bench for the WNBL team in pre-season and just got asked to go up to Sydney for the U16 state team tryouts bottom age as well. Congratulations Paige and good luck for the upcoming season! |
Year 11 student and avid runner, Emily M, completed the Melbourne 1/2 Marathon on October 16th. Emily completed the 21km in 1 hour and 41 minutes which is an average of 5 minutes per kilometer, I very solid pace to continue for 21kms. She came in 3rd position in the Under 19 age group which is a fantastic result for a 16 year old.
Emily has taken up recreational running for a local running club in the mornings before school and can often be seen running in the early hours of the morning. Perfectly suited for long distance running, Emily has a unique ability to sustain a consistent pace for kilometer after kilometer. Congratulations Emily! |
On Wednesday 31st August, MGSC entered two teams into the All Schools Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Competing as bottom ages in the Under 16 Girls 4x100 and Medley relay our girls also ran against the best and fastest Private and Government teams in the State.
The 4x100m relay team came home in 6th spot and you can see the video below. We start in Lane 2 with Chelsea R running the first bend holding her spot and gaining on Lane 3; Zoe C receives the baton cleanly and speeds past Lane 3 and catches the outside lanes as well; Teiki W dominates the bend by bridging Lanes 4 and 6 and changing the baton over in 4th spot; Kisarna B finishes the straight against the best of the best 15 year olds in the State to finish in 6th spot. A great effort by all the runners. Our Medley Relay team was up next. Teiki W started with a 200m run in 28seconds; passing to Zoe C who put in a fantastic 200m in 26seconds; Kisarna B was next up with the 400m run (64seconds) and passed on the baton in 3rd place to Millie B who ran the 800m leg. Millie was up against the Under 16 National Champion and various other State runners, Millie ran the 800m in 2.34 which meant our finish time was 4.32 and 8th spot out of 23 teams. A brilliant achievement considering the quality of athletes in the event and being a bottom age team. Thank you to all the parents who came and registered the girls for their events. Go Mentone!

Whilst most of the Mentone Girls' SC students were relaxing over the school holidays, MGSC had a team of ten Year 7 netballers who represented the school in the Waverley International Schools Netball Championships. The girls trained before school on a weekly basis throughout Term 2, and then played 15 games over 4 days competing against teams from interstate as well as overseas. The girls loved the experience and it was great to see such enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the competition.
Thank you to Ms Amanda O'Hara and Mark Windram for coaching, the parents for their support and guidance, and students who gave up four days of their holidays to take part in the competition. Go Mentone! |
2016 Olympic Dinner |
On June 18th, five MGSC students went to the Prime Minister’s 9th Olympic Dinner, performing the role as flag bearers. We met with 100 other flag bearers at the Melbourne Convention Centre anticipating an exciting night ahead.
When we arrived we went on the escalators and stairs up multiple levels to where the red carpet was awaiting. We rehearsed for about forty minutes on where we would stand along the red carpet, as well as where we would stand in the very large dinner hall. Once we were done with rehearsals we went into our change rooms where we chatted and ate very fancy sandwiches. The doors opened at 6.30pm and the event was about to start. We all grabbed a country's flag or an Olympic flag and made our way to the red carpet. We stood alongside the red carpet holding the flags for a grueling hour and a half, while admiring several Olympians, celebrities and watching fancy food pass us by! Once everyone left the red carpet, we all made our way to the dining hall. We stood there holding our flags while the Australian anthem was performed. Standing in front of bright lights, we knew we were experiencing an amazing time in history and a special opportunity simply by being in the same room as the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and many great Olympians such as Cathy Freeman and Dawn Frasier, as well as many other famous athletes. Once the anthem came to an end, we left the dining hall and ended back in our change rooms, where we found multiple cards autographed by many Australian Olympians. Having the opportunity to be at the Prime Minister’s Dinner was an experience we would never forget. Written by Sasha Long, 11E |
On Friday 3rd June, MGSC entered a team of three Year 8 students into the 2016 Balcombe Grammar Equathon Challenge.
Macayla G was first up in the Showjumping where her and her horse Beats performed wonderfully, only knocking one pole down. The Cross Country Run was next with Millie B having to run with a leg injury but still coming 4th. Next was the Swim with Cara J. There were so many people around the pool but Cara was relaxed and calm. She blitzed the swim coming 1st by 2 seconds. All in all, everyone had a great day with an even better result because the team came in 3rd position. A great effort by the girls. So proud of them all. Marianne Clark - Team Manager |
