The 2016 Beachside Swimming Carnival was held at Oakleigh Recreational Centre on a 38 degree Tuesday in March. Mentone Girls' SC Swim Team had 30 students competing in a variety of events and our Junior House Captains volunteering to help out with the officiating.
We started the day off finishing in 2nd spot in 8 out of the 10 breaststroke events. The Swim Team then hit their strides and started to string together a number of first place finishes. In no particular order we had Sam Gibson (Yr 11) win the 200m freestyle, Tori Edwards (Yr 11) win the 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, Olivia Davies (Yr 12) win the diving and 50m butterfly, Ava Jaconelli (Yr 8) win the 50m freestyle, Megan Kain (Yr 7) win the 50m backstroke, and Cara Jenkins (Yr 8) win the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke. As always, Mentone did very well in the relays where we won four out of the six 4x50m freestle relays; our U12/13 team was Megan Kain, Ava Jaconelli, Poppy Livings (Yr 7) and Zoe Bunn (Yr 7); U15 team was Tara Kelly, Jas Hands, Gabby Hall and Emily Kain (all Yr 9); U16 team was Liz Kourtis, Sophie Boyle, Sarah Mathews (all Yr 10) and Tori Edwards; and the U18 team was Marley Berntsen, Poppy Kelly, Tessa Gorban and Olivia Davies (all Yr 12). Our Swim Team achieved 1st or 2nd place in 38 of the possible 43 events. This incredible result meant that we won the Intermediate (age groups 15 and 16), Senior (age groups 17 and 18), and overall girls aggregriate. We will have 18 students representing Mentone at the Southern Metro Regionals at MSAC on March 24th. Congratulations to all swimmers who competed today and for those who helped out even when they just wanted to sit in the shade. A big thank you to Mr Jonathon Hall and Ms Emily Sheen for being Chief Judges on the day. Go Mentone.
