On June 18th, five MGSC students went to the Prime Minister’s 9th Olympic Dinner, performing the role as flag bearers. We met with 100 other flag bearers at the Melbourne Convention Centre anticipating an exciting night ahead.
When we arrived we went on the escalators and stairs up multiple levels to where the red carpet was awaiting. We rehearsed for about forty minutes on where we would stand along the red carpet, as well as where we would stand in the very large dinner hall. Once we were done with rehearsals we went into our change rooms where we chatted and ate very fancy sandwiches. The doors opened at 6.30pm and the event was about to start. We all grabbed a country's flag or an Olympic flag and made our way to the red carpet. We stood alongside the red carpet holding the flags for a grueling hour and a half, while admiring several Olympians, celebrities and watching fancy food pass us by! Once everyone left the red carpet, we all made our way to the dining hall. We stood there holding our flags while the Australian anthem was performed. Standing in front of bright lights, we knew we were experiencing an amazing time in history and a special opportunity simply by being in the same room as the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and many great Olympians such as Cathy Freeman and Dawn Frasier, as well as many other famous athletes. Once the anthem came to an end, we left the dining hall and ended back in our change rooms, where we found multiple cards autographed by many Australian Olympians. Having the opportunity to be at the Prime Minister’s Dinner was an experience we would never forget. Written by Sasha Long, 11E
