2017 MGSC Swimming Carnival
8/3/17
House Swimming report by Jackson House captains Sarah B and Reina T
All the Year 12’s arrived to school on Wednesday 15th February in their crazy costumes for their final time at the 2017 MGSC House Swimming carnival you could feel the excitement in the room. We were all eager to get on the bus and show our House spirit to all the other year levels. When we arrived, we got straight into the House spirit by running in and chanting. The crowd of colours at the Carnegie Swim Centre contained many iconic costumes which demonstrated strong house spirit. From Mackellar there was an eggplant and Ribena, in Kenny we saw the return of the sharks, in Melba there was Little Miss Sunshine and a pineapple, and in Jackson there was a pickle and an appearance by the legendary Steve Irwin. All students had the opportunity to participate in sporting events throughout the day such as 50metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay, 200m freestyle, and the 200m individual medley. Or if they were not interested in competing there were also novelty events to join into such as volleyball, water polo and even staff vs student’s boat race and relay which were great fun to watch. One of the events that I loved was the diving, because it was good to see so many people ‘jump’ out of their comfort zone and try something that may be challenging to them. The other event that I loved was the staff vs student boat race, even if I wasn’t on the boat half the time. It was very entertaining to watch the teachers get involved and show their competitive side, but it was pretty clear that they cheated. All the Houses showed their passion and House spirit during the House Chant and House dance-off by busting some quality moves and dressing up in creative outfits, leaving all the Tear 12’s with such memorable last House Swimming at Mentone Girls’. Importantly, the staff vs student relay race capped off a magnificent day. Mr Day, Mr Russell, Mr Bruhn and Mrs Moline were in one team with Mr Howells, Mr Hull, Miss Holman and Mrs Beggs who made up the second team against student representatives from each House. With a close few legs it was the staff team #1 who took away a nail biting victory from an extremely fast finishing Kenny House. Student participation throughout the entire day was incredible. Each competitor receives a point towards their House for every event they participate in. If you win the final of an event you receive 12 points, 2nd gets 11 points, and all the way down to 8th place who receives 5 points. At the end of the carnival we are able to see which student got the most points for their age group. This year the Age Group Champions were; U13 Olive L (59points); U14 Megan K (57points); U15 Cara J (72points) ; U16 Gabrielle H (79points); U17 Tash B (40points); and Open champion Sam G (62points). Cara J (Year 9) broke 4 MGSC records at this years Swimming Carnival. Cara broke 3 records set by former student Kirsten Roode - the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 50m butterfly. Cara also broke 2016 graduate Kiele Dale's 200m Individual medley record by 15seconds - a truly fantastic swim. Cara now hold's 6 MGSC swimming records. Thank you to all the staff who worked tirelessly throughout the day, but most importantly a big thank you to all competitors and houses who did an amazing job and should be extremely proud of their efforts. It was a nail-biting wait to see which house would take home gold. In 4th place was Mackellar (Purple) on 557 points, in 3rd place was Jackson (Green) with a total of 811 points, in 2nd place was Melba (Yellow) on 888 points; and in 1st place was Kenny (Blue) on 930 points who now have won back-to-back titles. Go Jackson. Written by Jackson House Captains – Sarah B and Reina T. The 2016 Beachside Swimming Carnival was held at Oakleigh Recreational Centre on a 38 degree Tuesday in March. Mentone Girls' SC Swim Team had 30 students competing in a variety of events and our Junior House Captains volunteering to help out with the officiating.
We started the day off finishing in 2nd spot in 8 out of the 10 breaststroke events. The Swim Team then hit their strides and started to string together a number of first place finishes. In no particular order we had Sam Gibson (Yr 11) win the 200m freestyle, Tori Edwards (Yr 11) win the 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, Olivia Davies (Yr 12) win the diving and 50m butterfly, Ava Jaconelli (Yr 8) win the 50m freestyle, Megan Kain (Yr 7) win the 50m backstroke, and Cara Jenkins (Yr 8) win the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke. As always, Mentone did very well in the relays where we won four out of the six 4x50m freestle relays; our U12/13 team was Megan Kain, Ava Jaconelli, Poppy Livings (Yr 7) and Zoe Bunn (Yr 7); U15 team was Tara Kelly, Jas Hands, Gabby Hall and Emily Kain (all Yr 9); U16 team was Liz Kourtis, Sophie Boyle, Sarah Mathews (all Yr 10) and Tori Edwards; and the U18 team was Marley Berntsen, Poppy Kelly, Tessa Gorban and Olivia Davies (all Yr 12). Our Swim Team achieved 1st or 2nd place in 38 of the possible 43 events. This incredible result meant that we won the Intermediate (age groups 15 and 16), Senior (age groups 17 and 18), and overall girls aggregriate. We will have 18 students representing Mentone at the Southern Metro Regionals at MSAC on March 24th. Congratulations to all swimmers who competed today and for those who helped out even when they just wanted to sit in the shade. A big thank you to Mr Jonathon Hall and Ms Emily Sheen for being Chief Judges on the day. Go Mentone. |
2016 MGSC Swimming Carnival
01/03/16
On Tuesday 1st March, MGSC competed in the annual House Swimming Carnival. It was a very hot but fantastic day with students competing in the 50metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, 4x100m relay, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, staff vs student race, and a beach volleyball competition.
The day ran very smoothly with the 50 metre freestyle heats running between 9-10am whilst the rest of the school arrived showing off their costumes and house spirit. Ms Blumenstein and Mr Marshall took control of the PA announcing results of events and providing running commentary on many races. Mr de Munk and Mr Shillabeer marshalled all the students into their lanes, whilst Mr Williams and Mr Trigellis-Smith were both shattered at having to use a whistle instead of a starter’s gun. The House Captains showed outstanding House spirit throughout the entire day and they dutifully ramped up their dance moves and voices for the House chant and dance off which occurred at midday. Importantly, the staff vs student relay race capped off a magnificent day. Mr Day, Mr Russell, Mr Howells and Mr Hall all volunteered to compete against representatives from each House and various teams of four. With a close few legs it was the staff who pulled away and took away another victory in the annual staff vs student relay race. This year the Age Group Champions were; U13 Megan Kain (46points) who won the 50m butterfly and backstroke; U14 Cara Jenkins (60points) who won all five of her events; U15 Gabriella Hall (76points) who came 1st or 2nd in six events and 4th in one other; U16 Isabel Pilcher (48points) who competed in five events; U17 Issy Foord (44points) who won the 50m butterfly and competed in four other events; and Open champion and Jackson House Captain, Poppy Kelly (67points) who won four out of six of her events. We had two students break MGSC swimming records. Olivia Davies (Year 12) broke the Open age group 50m butterfly in 35.37seconds; and Cara Jenkins (Year 8) who broke two school records; the U14 50m butterfly record in 34.05 seconds, and the U14 50m freestyle record in 30.11 seconds which was held by Linley Frame who represented Australia in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Congratulations to both swimmers. Thank you to all the staff who worked tirelessly throughout the day, also a big shout out to Mr Bruhn who did an amazing job in organising yet another fantastic carnival. But most importantly a big thank you to all competitors and houses who did an amazing job and should be extremely proud of their efforts. It was a nail-biting wait to see which house would take home gold. In 4th place was Jackson (Green) on 565 points, in 3rd place was Mackellar (Purple) with a total of 614 points, in 2nd place was Melba (Yellow) on an impressive score of 700 points; and in 1st place was Kenny (Blue) who bounced back from coming last in 2015, to ending Melba’s winning streak and winning in 2016 on 710 points. Go Kenny.
