The MGSC State Knockout athletics team has repeated their impressive performance in 2016 and won the 2017 State Knockout Championships. We entered two teams this year, a Junior team who finished 14th who gained valuable experience competing at a State event. Abbey T and Meka B both ran well in the 100m, Hope M and Holly T put in great times in the 800m, Michaela O tried her hardest in the hurdles, and Catriona M threw some good throws in the javelin and shot put. Cat also anchored the 4x200m run and overtook 3 runners in her heat.
The all impressive Intermediate team (2016 Junior gold medalist) who have won Gold again. We have had some very impressive results in the last few weeks and today tops them all. Competing as bottom age in the Intermediate age group, with three girls who could be in the junior team, and gunning for a top 5 result we exceeded all expectations and beat Firbank in 2nd and Caulfield Grammar in 3rd. Our girls were congratulated by countless private and public school coaches/teachers who all said that it is great to see a public school dominate an All Schools athletics competition. Zoe C was inspirational in winning the long jump, 2nd in the high jump and 3rd in the hurdles. Emily R won the shot put, Kisarna B won the javelin and ran a super 800m, Millie B put in another ripper 800m time, Milly W ran a great 100m and 200m, Aila B stepped up into the Inter team and ran a solid 100m, and Teiki W's 200m was excellent. The swedish medley team came in 3rd spot which was very valuable points. The Intermediate team is now off to Adelaide in December to compete at the National Knockout Championships. The team may change for Nationals depending on a variety of factors but in the meantime a huge congratulations to Kisarna B, Teiki W, Zoe C, Millie B, Milly W, Emily R, and Aila B on their Gold medal, and the junior team for representing the school at a State event. Go Mentone. On Monday 11 September the Year 7 netball team played in the State Finals, which included the top eight teams in the state. The girls played three games throughout the day, competing against teams from Yarrawonga, Sale and Rowville. They put up a strong fight in all their games and showed excellent team spirit.

The two U14 medley teams came in 10th and 22nd, and the two U16 medley teams came in 2nd and 10th. The U16 Medley relay A team had a thrilling finish in the timed event taking second place by only 0.04 seconds! Milly W and Zoe C ran two super 200m splits, followed by Kisarna B's sprint 400m, and a truly sensational 800m effort by Millie B. Millie gut ran the entire 800m with her finish coming right down to the wire. The U16 medley team was equally as impressive with Chelsea R, Cat M, Teiki W and Holly T putting together a fantastic time. In the U14 events, Aila B, Meka B, Abbey T and Hope M all impressed in their 100m and medley relay events. In the afternoon, one of the Year 7 teams competed and placed 5th in their section. Unfortunately we didn't have a team qualify for Nationals this year but the girls have done an exceptional job in their training and development nonetheless! The girls are on to training for the Spring Challenge. Go Mentone!.
It was that time of the year again, when everyone at MGSC, students AND teachers, came together to perform an array of musical items at the annual House Music Competition. Each of the four houses, lead by their house captains and conductors, met on several occasions to rehearse the set song 'Party in the USA' by Miley Cyrus, their own choice song, and their house chants.
For many weeks leading up the competition, the house choirs and instrumental bands practiced during lunch times every week to prepare the songs as best as they could. On the day of the competition, the gym was filled with enthusiasm and the colours of green, blue, purple and yellow. It was great to see that everyone was supporting their houses. The highlight for most were the beautiful performances by the house soloists. Never have we seen such amazing singing talent at our school, ranging across the year levels. The house captains lead their houses for their chants both on and off the stage, battling it out to be the loudest. Each house interpreted 'Party in the USA' differently, accompanied by dancing, props and even Hannah Montana! All houses put in a great effort, but again it was Kenny who took first place. Despite Melba coming disappointingly last (many would disagree with the judge's decision), it was a successful event, bringing everyone together to share the art of music. A big thankyou to all the house captains, music captains, conductors, accompanists, choirs, bands, and Mr Veevers for making this a memorable moment. We will definitely miss being part of MGSC House Music. Melba House Captains Alyssa Hopkins and Sasha Long On Tuesday 16 May the 2017 Athletics Carnival started off with a fashion walk around the track which showcased many impressive costumes, followed by a House chant with Melba taking the win. An overwhelming number of participants meant that all events were busy but running on time. The day rivaled with lots of fun and sporting events with some even winning their first ribbons. The students were sure to hear Mr Marshall over the loud speakers and the staff vs student race was one to watch, with Mr Bruhn overtaking the leading team by a mile. There were many records on the day; Millie B of Year 9 knocked 4 seconds off the 1500m record for a time of 5min and 7seconds; Emily R of Year 8 threw an impressive 33meters in the discus to break the record by 4meters; Kisarna B of Year 10 took off 0.28seconds in the 800m event in a time of 2min and 30 seconds; lastly was Zoe C of Year 10 who won 7 events and broke 3 records on the day – High Jump of 1.52meters, Long Jump of 5.08meters, and Triple Jump of 11.08meters.
The age group champions for the Athletics carnivals were; in the Under 13 age group was Sapphire H-C, in the Under 14’s was Catrina M, Under 15's was Zoe C, Under 16's was Taylah T, in the Under 17’s was Sarsha B, and Open age group was Olivia R. Lastly the overall House champion for this year's Athletics carnival was; in 4th place on 688 points Mackellar, in 3rd on 845 points was Melba, on 1041 points and 2nd place was Jackson, and on 1085 points and 1st place was Kenny. Congratulations Kenny House and Senior House captains Katrina Y and Viv F. On Sunday 14th May (Mother's Day), 61 students from Years 7-12 competed in the preliminary finals in Geelong. After a very early start, we had successful day with all teams performing exceptionally well and one team straight through to the state finals. The girls are now busy training for the states on Sunday June 4th. A huge thank you to the parents that got up so early on a Sunday to support their daughters.
