On Thursday 8th September we had 6 students compete and win GOLD in the All Schools Knockouts Championships at Lakeside Stadium against private and public schools from all over Victoria. The 6 students competed in 7 different events, all getting points for the team. The rules are simple as the 6 students must compete in 7 events; 100m, 800m, 90m hurdles, shot put, javelin, long jump, 4x200m relay. With a maximum of two events per students they will get points based on placing and distance or time between each competitor.
With very windy weather at Lakeside Stadium our day started off with Zoe C (Yr 9) running 14.00 in the 90m hurdles to be in top spot, Kisarna B also came first in the javelin with a throw of 36meter, and Emily R (Yr 7) threw an incredible 11.62 in the shot put to also come first. It was then onto long jump with Zoe Cunningham who came third with 5.25m, Milly W (Yr 7) ran 13.60 and Teiki W (Yr 9) ran 13.90 in the 100m sprint, and Kisarna ran 2.27 and Sophie B (Yr 7) ran 2.32 in the 800m event. Lastly, was the 4x200m relay event, a test of power and endurance over four 200m runners - we came home in 3rd position by 2seconds. All the above results meant that we ended up with a score of 6802 points which was 600points better than 2nd. The win means that the girls will be going to Nationals in Canberra in December, a truly remarkable achievement. Not only did we win gold but we had three students qualifying for Nationals in individual events. Kisarna - javelin, Emily - shot put, and Zoe - 90m hurdles. Thank you to all the parents who came and supported their daughter on the day, and again special thank you to Erina Cunningham for help coordinating and registering the team on the day. Go Mentone!

On Wednesday 31st August, MGSC entered two teams into the All Schools Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Competing as bottom ages in the Under 16 Girls 4x100 and Medley relay our girls also ran against the best and fastest Private and Government teams in the State. The 4x100m relay team came home in 6th spot and you can see the video below. We start in Lane 2 with Chelsea R (Year 8) running the first bend holding her spot and gaining on Lane 3; Zoe C (Year 9) receives the baton cleanly and speeds past Lane 3 and catches the outside lanes as well; Teiki W (Year 9) dominates the bend by bridging Lanes 4 and 6 and changing the baton over in 4th spot; Kisarna B (Year 9) finishes the straight against the best of the best 15 year olds in the State to finish in 6th spot. A great effort by all the runners. Our Medley Relay team was up next (video is below as well). Teiki started with a 200m run in 28seconds; passing to Zoe who put in a fantastic 200m in 26seconds to be in 1st position; Kisarna was next up with the 400m run (64seconds) and passed on the baton in 3rd place to Millie B (Year 8) who ran the 800m leg. Millie was up against the Under 16 National Champion and various other State runners, Millie ran the 800m in 2.34 which meant our finish time was 4.32 and 8th spot out of 23 teams. A brilliant achievement considering the quality of athletes in the event and being a bottom age team. Thank you to all the parents who came and registered the girls for their events. Go Mentone!

So far this term we have had the Intermediate Interschool sport competitions where our basketball and hockey teams competed well but did not progress to Regionals but the futsal team was successful in their round robin.
The Regional competitions were held over the last few weeks and our Year 8 and Intermediate's A teams will be going on to compete in the State competition on August 29th and September 5th respectively. Congratulations to our Senior B team as well who won their round robin, unfortunately the B group competition does not progress to States. Good luck to our Year 8 and Inter girls at the next round. Go Mentone! Every year at Mentone Girls SC the Pierre de Coubertin Award is given to a Year 12 student who demonstrates academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic values. This year this prestigious award was given to Marley B for her dedicated and wholehearted effort for MGSC and Jackson House throughout her schooling. Along with Maddie C and Charlotte B - Olympic Academy recipients, Marley represented Mentone at the MCG for the Olympic Academy where they met and discussed current issues with Australian Olympians such as the path to the Olympics, sugar content in daily foods and translating the Olympic values to regular day life. Below the three participants responded to a series of questions. Enjoy. 1. Did you enjoy the Olympic Academy?
Marley - Yes, I enjoyed the it. I feel very lucky to have been awarded the Pierre de Coubertin and that I had the opportunity to go to the MCG to take part in the activities and talk to some of the 2016 Rio Olympic team. I think that especially because it is the year of the Olympics it was that bit more exciting. Maddie - I really enjoyed it - great opportunity and was very lucky and grateful to be chosen! 100% recommend it for future sport-orientated students as you get to meet hundreds of other students who are similar to you and allows you to meet some of the highest, elite athletes in the world. Charlotte - Yes, I had an awesome time at Olympic Academy. It was a fantastic opportunity to socialise with other sporting teens across the state, and the day gave me a lot of skills and memories that I will cherish for a long time. It was also a really amazing experience to meet Olympians, both former and current, and get an insight into their lives as professional athletes. 2. What activities did you take part in and what were they trying to teach you? Marley - Out first activity was our chat session with an Olympian. We got to speak with Carmen Marton, who will be representing Australia in Taekwondo. We learned about her training program and weekly schedule as well as the physical and mental preparation that needs to be taken before competition. In our second rotation we worked with a VicHealth and they spoke to us about making the switch form sports drinks, soft drinks, flavoured milk etc. to water. We did an activity where we read the sugar contents of each drink and converted the amount in milligrams to teaspoons and piled sugar cubes in front of the drinks. We also brainstormed ideas on what we could do to encourage students to make water their drink of preference. In our third rotation after lunch, we went to the National Sports Museum where we listened to two of Australia’s past Olympians speak about their Olympic experience and then we did a scavenger hunt to find the answers about past Olympic trivia. Maddie - We started off the day with a getting-to-know-you activity with other students which was good as it allowed us to connect with people that we wouldn't usually met. We then had a talk from a former Olympian who we found out went to Parkdale Secondary College and was very interesting and had some good stories. We were then split up into our groups and the first activity we were involved in was the 'meet the Olympians'. Here we got to have a question and answer time with Caroline Marton - a taekwondo champion, she is representing Australia in the upcoming Olympics. We heard about her life and how she got to where she is now and then asked her some questions. We then had the activity where we focused more on the health side of the day. We had a session with VicHealth where we learnt how much sugar are in our daily food intake and how certain drinks have very alarming amounts of sugar in them. It was very interesting and we learnt a lot. We then had lunch which was nice as we got to chat to a few other people from different schools. We then had a tour of the MCG sports museum that I never knew existed - it was great. Our tour guides for the museum were two former Olympians, Pam Kilborn-Ryan had won gold back in the late 1990's. It was very interesting and we definitely learnt so much from the day. We got so much out of the day and I would do it again in a heart beat! Charlotte - Throughout the day, there were four different activities. Firstly, we listened to an interview with Carmen Marton, an Olympic taekwondo athlete on the road to Rio. She spoke about her experiences as an athlete, the challenges that she has faced throughout her career and how she overcame them, and also about how she is preparing for the Olympics in Rio. She also taught our group about the rules taekwondo and gave a demonstration of different kicks. After the interview, VicHealth gave an informative session on the sugar content in energy drinks. We compared different types of drinks based on their sugar content, and looked into the benefits of water as a substitute for sugar filled drinks. After lunch, we met with two former Olympians in the National Sports Museum and had to complete a quiz on the Olympics, based on the information in the museum. This was really fun, and it was really cool to see all of the collected materials and memorabilia from each Olympic games. To conclude the day, there was a leadership session, which required everyone from different schools to cooperate and work together to complete a number of different activities. I really enjoyed this, as I got to bond with different sports enthusiasts from around Melbourne. 3. What was the highlight of the experience and would you recommend it to future Pierre de Coubertin candidates? Marley - For me the highlight was definitely the third rotation because it was really interesting to look around the museum at the olympic displays and learn about past olympic teams and venues. I would certainly recommend participating in the day to future Pierre de Coubertin recipients. Maddie - I think for me, the highlight of the day was listening to Carmen's story of how she got to where she is and the hard work and effort she put in. It made me feel quite motivated to work hard as in time it pays off and you can achieve the impossible. 100% recommend to future students - great day, great stories and great people! Charlotte - I found that the highlight of the day was definitely hearing from the Olympians. Listening to Carmen Marton talk about the road to Rio was really inspiring. It was also great to hear her talk about the balance between school and sports. However, the whole day was such an amazing experience, and any future Olympic Academy or Pierre de Coubertin recipients should definitely make the most of the day - it was unforgettable! Congratulations to Marley, Maddie and Charlotte for attending the Academy and for their efforts over their high school careers. We are extremely proud of you! Year 10 student Eleanor G is currently in Sanremo, Italy, competing in the 2016 420 World Sailing Championships from July 15-23rd. The 18 MGSC State Cross Country competitors made their way to Bundoora Park to test their legs against the best in the State today. After a long day in the bus and at the course, we are delighted to say that Mentone had an incredibly successful day with 15 of the 18 runners going home with a medallion.

The defending State champion U14 team repeated their feat from 2015 and won Gold again. Millie B finished 7th, Kisarna B 16th, Maddie A 36th, Teiki W 40th and Violet A 44th. Daisy W 38th also competed in the U14 event and Hannah E 34th was our solo U15 competitor. The U16 team won a Gold medal as well. Unsure of how they would go against the States best, with a top 3 position in mind, the girls all run superbly with Emily M finishing 16th, Emilie T 42nd, Sarah M 50th, Tash B 51st and Ebony A 65th. Last but not least was our solo Year 12 runner and Kenny House Captain - Maddie C. Maddie has competed in Cross Country every year at MGSC and set her sights on making States for the first time. Not only did she succeed in making it to States but she came home in the top 50 finishing 41st. Well done on a great XC career at MGSC Maddie. As always, thank you to Mrs Jackie Mathews for her help and support as well as the parents who attended. The Cross Country season is now over and our girls have outdone themselves yet again, I thank all the girls who attended the cold morning running sessions and those who committed hours outside of school to achieve these results. Congratulations and I thoroughly look forward to next years XC season. Go Mentone! Whilst most of the Mentone Girls' SC students were relaxing over the school holidays, MGSC had a team of ten Year 7 netballers who represented the school in the Waverley International Schools Netball Championships. The girls trained before school on a weekly basis throughout Term 2, and then played 15 games over 4 days competing against teams from interstate as well as overseas. The girls loved the experience and it was great to see such enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the competition.
Thank you to Ms Amanda O'Hara and Mark Windram for coaching, the parents for their support and guidance, and students who gave up four days of their holidays to take part in the competition. Go Mentone! What a day Mentone Girls' SC had at the Regional Cross Country carnival at Ballam Park in Frankston. MGSC had 24 students compete in the 3000m event which was made harder due to a fierce head wind across the entire course.
Our day started off with Emily M racing home to 3rd place with our U16 team of Emily, Emilie T, Sarah M, Tash B and Ebony A coming in 1st place. The U15s were next and Hannah E finished in 6th spot which qualifies her for States. The U14 team which won Gold at States in 2015 was successful again with Millie B (4th), K.B (5th), Teiki W (7th) Daisy W (9th), Violet A (14th) and Maddie A (15th) all going through to States to defend their title. Last up was the U13 team and Sophie B who blitzed the field to come home in 1st place and lead the team of Holly T, Mia T, Angel C and Sienna L to 1st place as well. In summary, MGSC will have 18 competitors at the State Carnival. 3 of our teams, 13s/14s/16s, and 3 individual students all qualified - a truly incredible achievement. Thank you to the parents who came and supported as well as to Mrs Mathews for her guidance and motivation on the day. Go Mentone! On June 18th, five MGSC students went to the Prime Minister’s 9th Olympic Dinner, performing the role as flag bearers. We met with 100 other flag bearers at the Melbourne Convention Centre anticipating an exciting night ahead.
When we arrived we went on the escalators and stairs up multiple levels to where the red carpet was awaiting. We rehearsed for about forty minutes on where we would stand along the red carpet, as well as where we would stand in the very large dinner hall. Once we were done with rehearsals we went into our change rooms where we chatted and ate very fancy sandwiches. The doors opened at 6.30pm and the event was about to start. We all grabbed a country's flag or an Olympic flag and made our way to the red carpet. We stood alongside the red carpet holding the flags for a grueling hour and a half, while admiring several Olympians, celebrities and watching fancy food pass us by! Once everyone left the red carpet, we all made our way to the dining hall. We stood there holding our flags while the Australian anthem was performed. Standing in front of bright lights, we knew we were experiencing an amazing time in history and a special opportunity simply by being in the same room as the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and many great Olympians such as Cathy Freeman and Dawn Frasier, as well as many other famous athletes. Once the anthem came to an end, we left the dining hall and ended back in our change rooms, where we found multiple cards autographed by many Australian Olympians. Having the opportunity to be at the Prime Minister’s Dinner was an experience we would never forget. Miss Tess Molina - Aerobics Coach On Friday 3rd June, MGSC entered a team of three Year 8 students into the 2016 Balcombe Grammar Equathon Challenge.
Macayla G was first up in the Showjumping where her and her horse Beats performed wonderfully, only knocking one pole down. The Cross Country Run was next with Millie B having to run with a leg injury but still coming 4th. Next was the Swim with Cara J. There were so many people around the pool but Cara was relaxed and calm. She blitzed the swim coming 1st by 2 seconds. All in all, everyone had a great day with an even better result because the team came in 3rd position. A great effort by the girls. So proud of them all. Marianne Clark - Team Manager |
